Hudsons Bakery
A series of carefully considered design moves transformed this tiny bakery space into a welcoming destination for customers. The servery bench, dividing wall, and bench seat create a little walk-in alcove, and a cosy retreat from the street. Comfortable bench seating along the wall invites people to sit within the small bay while they await their coffee or a toasted sandwich. A blue curtain envelopes the customers within the niche as they sit, and separates the front nook from the ovens in the baking area at the back.
All of the joinery items were made from plywood, surrounding the dining area with a warm, toasty atmosphere, akin to stepping into a plywood bath. Earthy zellige tiles made from Moroccan clay extend into the baking area, tying the spaces together with a grounded warmth of the highest quality. Unifying the entire bakery is a soft paint colour called Bread Crumb Half, casting the space in a golden glow. Brass corded lights made in Italy illuminate the area with a warm yellow light.
Freshly baked cookies, bagels, baguettes, and cakes are beautifully displayed in a hand-crafted timber and glass cabinet. The wooden case envelopes the bread, elevating the products and drawing attention to each baked piece. Cookie boxes, coffee beans, gluten free ingredients, and baking utensils are arranged along the plywood display bench and on long shelves that extend to the back of the store. The design and material pallet becoming a soft background allowing the products to shine. This architectural design by my practice Studio Clare is a study in the art of bread display.
